A magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurred near Charlottesville, Virginia a couple of hours earlier this afternoon on August 23. The epicenter was near the towns of Louisa and Mineral less than 30 miles from our location. Our building shook and there was some noise, but fortunately no injuries or damage at our location. Being on US 29 North, we can hear a little increase in emergency service activity over the last couple of hours. We hope everyone the best in our community and appeciate eveyone who’s already checked on us.

I was in the US Post Office on 29 North when the earthquake occurred. Everyone felt the earthquake, but no panic ensued. After the earthquake, everyone exited the building after the postal service employees asked everyone to evacuate. I was there to mail out a notification to everyone on our mailing list about an upcoming Bullfrog Spa Labor Day Promotion. Since the mailing has been delayed at least a day and may not be received by the weekend, I wanted to let everyone know about the Bullfrog Spa Factory Rebate starting this Friday, August 26, 2011. Free Union and Scottsville July 4th Parades

There were huge crowds at both parades this year and Froggie really enjoyed seeing everyone. It was really hot, but everyone found a shady spot, kicked back and enjoyed the huge spectacles and celebrations that are the Free Union and the Scottsville Independence Day Parades.

EnviroSmarte would like to thank the Scottsville Volunteer Fire Department and the Town of Scottsville, Virginia for hosting this patriotic parade every year. The parade just keeps growing every year and the organization of it is truly professional.

EnviroSmarte also thanks the entire community of Free Union. This celebration of our nations founding truly incorporates the spirit of the celebration in a small rural community. I think the whole town was there!

When people consider adding a hot tub or spa to their home, their primary focus is usually the associated health benefits, its size and its unique features. Most people would like to avoid using words like maintenance, cleaning, checking, adding and changing. What is a “Self Cleaning Hot Tub”

Maybe you’ve heard someone say it, or maybe you saw it in an ad, but one of the latest features touted for a hot tub is that it is a ”Self Cleaning Hot Tub”. Now as you consider this, you may think … “Wow, I’ll never have to clean or do anything to my hot tub”.  Let’s consider what must done to properly maintain your hot tub:

• All hot tubs and spas obviously have water. To keep the water safe you must use a sanitizer system (something to kill all the critters). EnviroSmarte offers several Spa Water Systems from which to choose ranging from basic chemical systems to chemical-free systems. Regardless of the sanitizer system chosen, periodic water checks, adjustments and additions must be made to the water.
• All hot tubs and spas use filters so these must be periodically cleaned or changed.
• All hot tubs and spas must have the water changed and the spa shell surface cleaned periodically (every 3 -6 months).
• The “Self Cleaning Hot Tub” is obviously impossible and is just a sales gimmick.

“Self Cleaning Hot Tub” Further Explored

If you dig deeper into some of the claims, the amount of filtration seems to determine a “Self Cleaning Hot Tub”. According to these claims, all water  being filtered every 15 minutes (the turnover rate) supposedly means that it is a “Self Cleaning Hot Tub” . Again, let’s look at the facts:

• All hot tubs and spas have some type of filtration system incorporated into the design. There are only two types of filtration systems. The first uses the main jet pump (usually on low speed) to circulate the water through the filter. The second uses a separate dedicated circulation pump to pump the water through the filter. Each has advantages and disadvantages as to quietness of operation, energy efficiency and initial cost.
• Hot tubs promoted as a “Self Cleaning Hot Tub” always use a dedicated circulation pump.
• A ”Self Cleaning Hot Tub” means The Best Turnover Rate available with a dedicated circulation pump.

Finding the Best “Self Cleaning Hot Tub”

Now that it’s established that the “Self Cleaning Hot Tub” doesn’t really exist, you may decide that the best “Self Cleaning Hot Tub” is the one that has the lowest turnover rate. Research by leading physicians and scientists shows that the body and mind undergo significant changes while soaking in warm water and that these changes can be greatly beneficial to health and wellness.

For thousands of years it has been understood that soaking in hot water provides health benefits and helps individuals achieve a greater sense of well-being. The Romans and various other cultures discovered that soaking in warm mineral springs seemed to soothe and rejuvenate the body and mind. It just wasn’t known exactly why warm water immersion in hot springs, hot tubs, and jetted tubs provided these benefits. More recently researchers and physicians have set out to scientifically uncover the physiological effects of warm water on the individual and why it just feels so good to relax in a hot tub or bath. Results of their studies now show empirically that soaking in hot water does your body good.

Dr. Bruce Becker, a physician and research professor at Washington State University and director of the National Aquatics & Sports Medicine Institute (NASMI) is leading these recent efforts to understand the effects of warm water immersion and to use this information to create new and effective therapy applications. Dr. Becker explains the goals for these studies, “You know when you come home from a long day at work and you’re stressed out?” he asks. “You want to sink into a hot bathtub and go, ‘Ahhh.’ I’m trying to figure out what the hell that ‘Ahhh’ is all about.” (Popke)

Warm water immersion research is ongoing but the studies by Dr. Becker and ASMI finished to date show many impressive and beneficial health results from soaking in warm water. This ongoing research should continue to provide medical and therapy professionals the information required to provide warm water treatments that will ultimately benefit patients in recovery and therapy situations. For the average person this research seems to show that soaking in hot tubs, spas, and warm baths can lead to better mood, increased cardiovascular health, pain relief, lower blood pressure, better mental and emotional health, along with a sense of balance and overall wellness. These studies are producing scientific confirmation that the soothing feelings experienced for years during warm water therapy in warm springs, hot tubs, mineral spas, and warm baths feel good because they actually are doing good things for our bodies and minds.

Scientific findings by the National Aquatics & Sports Medicine Institute and others show that immersion to the neck, as is experienced in a hot tub, causes a shift in blood volume, moving it from the body’s extremities to the chest area. This shift increases the amount of blood in the heart. Consequently, this additional blood in the heart improves heart function by increasing the volume of blood that each heart beat actually pumps through the circulatory system. In effect, the heart becomes more efficient while a person is in the water, pumping more blood with the same amount of effort.

Immersion in hot tubs  also decreases resistance in the circulatory system making it easier for blood to flow through the arteries and veins. This effect, combined with the increased volume of blood pumped by the heart during immersion, means that the cardiovascular system operates much more efficiently during hydrotherapy.

Since water allows the heart to operate with less effort, immersing one’s self in a pool or hot tub is like giving the heart a rest. Physicians like Dr. Becker see this discovery as an opportunity for developing water therapy applications for those who have suffered heart damage due to heart attacks and other diseases. For the general healthy population, relaxing in water is probably an effective way to limit stress on the heart for a period of time, helping it to remain healthy and strong for the long run.

A NASMI study and other scientific research suggest that hot water therapy, 98-102°F, helps to increase blood circulation within the muscles. This is likely one of the reasons that soaking in a hot tub or warm bath often relieves muscle and joint soreness. Researchers, including Dr. Becker of the National Aquatics and Sports Medicine Institute, suggest that the improved circulation that occurs while soaking in warm to hot water may aid in the process of healing after muscle, bone, joint and connective tissue injuries such as those that often occur in sports.

Research on the subject of muscular circulation during immersion in hot tubs  and other warm water environments also suggests that the effect of increased blood circulation within muscles can also be especially beneficial for those who experience decreased circulation due to diabetes and some auto-immune diseases.

Recent NASMI studies show that warm water immersion like that offered by hot tub  therapy significantly decreases both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In these studies a reduction in blood pressure also occurred during immersion in cold and neutral temperatures to a degree. However, diastolic blood pressure was reduced significantly more in warm water. Even though blood pressure seemed to be lowered with immersion in all water temperatures, the positive effects of lowered blood pressure remained with the individual much longer after leaving warm water than after exiting water with cold and neutral temperatures. This was especially evident in the study participant’s diastolic blood pressure.

Referring to past study results, researchers at NASMI suggest that hot tub therapy, with immersion up to the shoulders or neck, increases blood circulation to the brain. They believe that this effect of increased blood flow to the brain could result in increased cognitive function. In other words, you may just be a little smarter while soaking in your hot tub. Warm water immersion may also help with recovery after traumatic head and brain injuries and it could prove to be an effective therapy for those who have experienced strokes.

There is also some evidence that suggests that immersion in hot tubs can positively affect kidney function. During warm water immersion renal function can become more efficient and edemas can be reduced when they are present (Becker et al.). This could be great news for those experiencing reduced kidney function due to any of several conditions.

Recent studies by the National Aquatics and Sports Medicine Institute and others offer a look at the enormous potential for improving health and wellness through aquatic therapy, especially warm water immersion such as hot tub therapy. For some time there has been evidence that suggested that it was good to soak in warm water. Now science is actually proving that warm water immersion improves the function of our autonomic nervous system leading to decreased stress and a greater sense of balance and overall wellness. Water also has a significant beneficial effect on our heart and circulation. It improves blood flow to the muscles which reduces pain and speeds healing. Warm water relieves symptoms of diabetes, lowers blood pressure, and may even make you smarter by increasing brain circulation and function.

They’re finally getting to the bottom of why warm water makes us feel so good. Ongoing studies in aquatic therapy will certainly uncover more valuable information about the health benefits of warm water. For now it would appear that if you are not spending some time relaxing in a hot tub  that you are probably missing out on your chance for better health.

Recently reported research finds a link between pool chemicals like chlorine and pre-cancerous changes in human subjects.  The researchers argue that the positive benefits of swimming can be retained by reducing the health risks of pool water.

The Research Reported by CREAL

The Barcelona-based Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) reported the research to the public in its September 13 news release .  CREAL says “Swimming in chlorinated indoor pools can cause genotoxic effects (DNA damage) and respiratory effects.”This research was first published in several installments in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal,  and is based on work by an international consortium of scientists led by Manolis Kogevinas, associated with various hospitals and universities. The researchers collected blood, urine and exhaled air samples from 49 non-smoking adult volunteers before and after swimming 40 minutes in an indoor chlorinated pool.  They measured the concentrations of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) like trihalomethanes (e.g., like chloramines, a byproduct of chlorine) in exhaled breath and correlated them with “biomarkers” for biological changes that might be associated with pre-cancerous changes in cell tissues.The swimmers’ exhalation after swimming contained 7 times the concentration of trihalomethanes than before swimming.  This was associated with changes in the biomarkers that “support potential genotoxic effects of exposure to DBPs from swimming pools.  The positive health effects gained by swimming could be increased by reducing the potential health risks of pool water.”

Among the many discoveries of the studies by the National Aquatics & Sports Medicine Institute, perhaps most interesting are those relating to the positive effects of hot tub therapy on the regulation and balance of the nervous system.

The autonomic nervous system, “the motherboard for human bioregulation” (Becker et al.), is comprised of 2 parts that affect and regulate numerous body functions including our moods, emotions, organ system function, and physical state. The two divisions of the autonomic nervous system are the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. Each has an important function in keeping the body and mind in check and safe. Dysfunction in the form of too much influence by either system can have negative effects on our emotional, mental, and physical health.

The sympathetic nervous system controls our fight or flight reactions keeping us, essentially, on our toes and safe from harm. The parasympathetic nervous system controls our relaxation and repose responses. (Becker et al.) The body functions optimally when these two systems are in balance. Too much influence from the sympathetic nervous system can lead to harmful stress and several related physical, emotional, and mental problems. Too much influence from the parasympathetic side can lead to depression, obesity, and other related issues.

Studies performed by immersing subjects in 102° F water show that during warm water therapy sessions the influence of the sympathetic nervous system is diminished. This effect occurred in all individuals tested although the degree can vary somewhat according to age and other factors.  This observed decrease in sympathetic dominance allows the parasympathetic nervous system to balance with the sympathetic and leads to a greater sense of relaxation, peacefulness, calm, and well-being amongst those tested.

Perhaps even more remarkable is that this balancing effect seems to last well after the individual leaves the water. It may indeed show that regular soaking in a hot tub can help an individual retain a balanced state of nervous system function, which leads to a greater sense of well-being throughout their daily activities, helping them to lead more balanced, happy, and productive lives.
